Galliano at Zara: the 2011 April Fools' joke that became a collection fifteen years later
Re{form} Vol. 1 is on sale. What was once a Twitter hoax can now be judged on the rail, and it deserves a tailor's eye.
On 1 October 2026 at 10:00, Zara releases Re{form} Vol. 1, the first collection signed by John Galliano. The brand frames it with one line: Authored by Couturier John Galliano. Built from our memory, made for now.
It opens a two-year collaboration announced last March. And for those of us who have been at this a while, there is a touch of irony in it.
Because on Spain's Día de los Inocentes in 2011, this exact news had already been announced. It was a lie. Here is how that joke ended up with a real-life sequel.

The Rule: To Re-form Is Not to Design From Scratch
This is what sets the project apart from other designer collaborations. Galliano does not start from a blank pattern. He starts from garments Zara has already sold.
According to press coverage of the Paris pop-up, the starting points included humble pieces such as a white cotton shirt and a calico slip dress carrying an archive label. From there: deconstruction, draping and dramatic tailoring.
How the 2011 Hoax Spread
Galliano had just left Dior after the controversy over his 2011 remarks. The noise was huge. In that climate, the Spanish blog Rayas y Cuadros tweeted, on Día de los Inocentes, that Galliano was becoming head designer at Zara: Inditex was signing him to shake up the flagship of Arteixo.
The timing was flawless. That is why people believed it, and why they shared it. We did too, and within hours it had gone around the fashion blogosphere.
One nuance a serious writer cannot skip: he is not Zara's creative director. It is a two-year collaboration, signed as "author" of each instalment. The hoax got the destination right and the job title wrong.

What Is Inside Re{form}
Trade press reports 35 looks, conceived without gender, with a studio campaign shot by Steven Meisel. Each look has its own French title.
Pieces that recur across the images and the coverage: cropped tailcoats, elongated bicornes, bias cuts, layers of tulle, patent-look trousers, Oxfords, boots and court shoes, and a bag called Tri Chic.
- The cropped tailcoat: strong shoulders, an exaggerated lapel and a long tail at the back. This is the silhouette that dominates the photos.
- The oversized coat: dropped shoulder, brushed-looking wool and a collar worn up over a high white shirt collar.
- The fur effect: on shoulders, hems and cuffs. Zara lists it as its own category in the collection.
- The red leg warmers over the shoe: the detail that will be copied most and worn to the office least.
Why the bicorne is not a whim
The bicorne and the lace jabot point to post-revolutionary France. Zara does not say so; that reading is ours. Galliano explored that world of revolutionary dandies in his Central Saint Martins graduate collection, Les Incroyables. Anyone who knows his story will recognise the gesture.
The Tailoring: What You Can Actually Wear
Here is the useful part for readers of this blog. Amid all the theatre there is one suit that needs no translation: a double-breasted pinstripe jacket in dark grey, with wide-leg trousers and a green gingham pocket square.
The pinstripe grew up tied to the City of London and the office suit. Reinterpreted with a wide shoulder and a comfortable rise, it loses its stiffness and keeps its authority.
What to check before you buy
As far as we could find, Zara has not published fabric compositions or weights for Re{form}. So, no figures we cannot back up. What you can check in store: the composition label, how the cloth drapes on the body, the lining and the cleanliness of the inside seams.
And one test that never fails on a double-breasted jacket: the shoulder should sit without wrinkles and the lapel should not gape. That shows in the fitting room, whatever the construction.
The Colour: Black, Burgundy and a Red That Makes Noise
Coverage describes a palette moving away from Zara's usual khaki and brown towards purple, turquoise, red and acid green. In the images we have, black weighs most, with red as the shock. Shades are approximations taken from the photographs.
⚠ What to avoid
Buying the complete look from the photo. Outside an editorial, a bicorne with red leg warmers is fancy dress. Choose one structured piece, the double-breasted or the coat, and wear it with what you already own: white shirt, black shoe, plain trousers.
How and Where to Get It
According to US press, the entry price starts at $29.90. Always confirm prices and sizes on Zara's site, as they can vary by market.
Zara and the big names
This is not Zara's first time working with signature designers: the press cites earlier collaborations with Stefano Pilati, Anna Sui, Narciso Rodriguez and Samuel Ross. It is, however, the first time Galliano has worked in mass-market fashion.
One piece of context we will not dodge: the comeback arrives weeks after Galliano withdrew from a Met exhibition that was to be dedicated to him, and the press links it to the 2011 remarks. Each reader will decide how much weight to give that. Here we talk about clothes.
Re{form} is not a suit for every day. It is a lesson in turning an ordinary garment into another one with intent: structure, proportion and detail outrank price.
Our advice is concrete. If you buy anything, make it the piece of tailoring that fits best when you try it on. If the shoulder is wrong, no signature can fix it.
The 2011 hoax was a joke. The 2026 version is a collection. The difference is that this one is judged on the rail, not on the timeline.
